Summary

Biography of a professional soldier, who commanded the Australian force in Crete against the Germans in the Second World War, directed the Australian advance from Kokoda, and was in command during the defeat of the Japanese in the Pacific. Analyses his military performance, and also provides insights into his private life, based largely on his letters to his wife. Includes references, a bibliography and an index. The author is a Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University. His other publications include 'High Command: Australian and Allied Strategy 1939-1945'. First printed in 1992.
